Brewed in the ‘Burgh, the Evolution of Our City’s Brewpubs

By Hal B. Klein, Pittsburgh Magazine In and around Pittsburgh, brewpubs and taprooms are supplementing and in some cases even replacing the corner bar. The destinations, which serve beer brewed only by the company with the name on the sign, draw both locals and loyalists, serve as de facto community centers and help startups to build their brands. In the past, beer geeks sought out perfectly crafted Belgian lambics or German marzens at import bottle shops or craft-beer bars. Read Full Article Here>

While working as an assistant brewer at Homestead’s Rock Bottom, Mr. Ilnicki answered an ad on a jobs board at the American Brewing …

As the brewer and partner of Spoonwood Brewing Co., Ilnicki has reason to be hopeful after about 250 people jammed the new brewpub during its opening weekend. Read the Full Article Here>

Munch goes to Spoonwood Brewing Company in Bethel Park

By Dan Gigler / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette In the introduction of his 2012 book “Brewing in Greater Pittsburgh,” Dr. Robert Musson estimates that from the 1800s to the pre-Prohibition era nearly 100 different breweries existed in what is now considered metropolitan Pittsburgh. But like an increasingly ornery bartender clanging the bell, flipping the lights on and yelling “GIT AHT!” at last call, a combination of the Volstead Act, consolidation, industrial decline and the rise of the national macrobrews all conspired to eventually drain the region’s brewing culture from that of a …
